Mountains to Sea Cycleway
The Mountains to Sea Cycle Trail consists of a series of roads and cycle trails that link Ohakune, Raetihi and the Whanganui river to the sea at Whanganui. Includes The Ohakune Old Coach Road, Fishers Track and Mangapurua Valley. The trail is also part of the New Zealand cycle trails network.
Ohakune Old Coach Road (Horopito to Ohakune) Distance: 14km The trail connects Ohakune to Horopito along part of the old coach road. The Ohakune old coach road was used to ferry rail travelers between Ohakune and Raurimu, essential for allowing rail travel between Auckland and Wellington on this yet completed part of the main trunk line between 1907and 1908. The track features two disused rail viaducts and has historic signage along the way.
Fishers Track (National Park Village to Oio Road) Distance: 21km to Oio Road Starts at National Park Railway Station with a easy climb for the first 3kms then descends 500 vertical meters into the Retaruke river valley.
The ride includes sections of Native bush and views of the Tongariro National Park.
Oio Road to Whakahoro Distance: 27 kms – 18kms of gravel Follow Oio road to Whakahoro a quiet country road following the Retaruke river valley.
Mungupurua Valley/Bridge to Nowhere Distance: 38kms – one way Trail follows the Mungupurua Valley through the Whanganui National park before reaching the Bridge to Nowhere, on the Whanganui River.
You can return by the same route, or take a jetboat to Pipiriki and return by road from there.
